Round 4 Windsor

The Fourth round of the championships was held on June 6 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Hannes Arch (Austria) suffered one of the worst pylon hits of his career in Friday practice, then bounced back to set a new track record and win the race on Sunday to make it a cool 3 victories in a row. Paul Bonhomme (Britain) finished second in a classic close fight between these two, in which Arch edged Bonhomme by only 0.63 seconds. American Kirby Chambliss finally made to the podium for his first time this season, finishing just 3.03 seconds behind Arch. The track in Windsor, considered by some as one of the more difficult, is 5 kilometers over the Detroit River, right on the US/Canada border. A crowd of 110,000 watched from both Windsor and Detroit on a cool, overcast day with tricky winds. Similar winds were also seen on Qualifying day, which is partly responsible for a close call to Australian Pilot, Matt Hall's MXS-R. He encountered a high speed wing stall in one of the tight turns and he lost control to the point of his wing and right wheel contacting the surface of the water. The former Royal Australian Air Force Fighter pilot then regained control and returned unscathed to the airstrip. Arch's victory narrowed the gap between he and Bonhomme, who still holds the lead at 41 points with Hannes just 2 points back. The third place finish for Chambliss vaults him into fourth place with 26 points. The next race in New York, on June 20, is a home race for Kirby. |
