My Current Project

This is the Bugatti 100  hanging in the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, Wi.

I am building a 1:4 scale  R/C  version of this plane as well.  Including the contra-rotating props, opposed split flaps, and functional cooling vents in the leading edges of the stabilizers.

Check the "Model Gallery" to see construction photos.

Caudron C460

This is my 1:4 scale R/C replica of the French racer that dominated the 1936 National Air Races in Los Angeles. As one of the first racers to use a variable pitch prop, split flaps, and retractable landing gear, it easily outflew the competition in both the Thompson Trophy and Greve races. The pilot, Michel Detroyat (a.k.a. "The Falcon of France") , a French aerobatic pilot, became the first and only foreign pilot to ever win the Thompson Trophy.

Macchi-Castoldi MC-72

This is a 1:4 scale R/C replica of the MC-72 built by a friend of mine in Santa Ana, CA.  It is the only operational, I/C powered, contra-rotating prop that I have been able to locate.  John Rapillo and 3 others, with combined model experience of over 100 years, designed and built this masterpiece.

On October 23, 1934 the MC-72 and it's pilot, Francesco Agello, set a new World Speed Record of 440 mph, after which the plane was never flown again. That speed still stands today as the fastest speed achieved by a piston powered Seaplane. See footage of the MC-72 in action    HERE
